Rachel Kalinoski and Haley Herman

Herman and Kalinoski were two of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically gifted high school seniors met all the requirements to advance to Finalist standing in the competition.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) – a test which serves as an initial screening of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year–and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.

Sixteen SUA students entered 42 pieces of art in the regional judging of the annual Governor's Youth Art Exhibit on March 6th.  From the 12,000 regional entries from fifteen regions, approximately 2,500 were selected to enter the state judging phase. State jurors then selected 300 for the actual exhibition, with 25 of the 300 chosen to receive the Governor's Award of Excellence. SUA had six pieces accepted and they moved on to the state judging phase on March 12th. Three of the six pieces were accepted into the very competitive state exhibit.

The Ursuline Sisters have a long and splendid history in Toledo, beginning in 1854 when they came from Cleveland and established residence at the corner of Cherry and Erie Streets and, not four days after their arrival, began St. Ursula Academy.

The Ursulines’ influence continues to be strong.  Recently, the Sisters made a deliberate sacrificial gift to St. Ursula Academy – the largest ever given by the community – to provide scholarships to St. Ursula Academy students who demonstrate both desire for an SUA education and financial need.  The Sisters chose to make this important gift as a concrete demonstration of their passion for the “vision of St. Angela working with women and helping them with a foundation of dignity and independence,” said Sr. Donna Frey, President of the Ursulines of Toledo.
